Mental Health

Body

We all have our ups and downs, our good days and our bad.

A man looks quite sad.

Having good mental health means feeling positive about yourself, being able to cope with everyday pressures, and being able to form and maintain relationships.

Anyone can suffer from poor mental health. It affects at least one in five of the population. When we think about poor mental health we often think of certain conditions such as schizophrenia or depression. But mental health problems also include common conditions, such as stress, anxiety and feeling down. If not dealt with more serious symptoms can then develop.

South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust

The South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust provides a range of community mental health services which are targeted at those with severe mental illness and their carers, while supporting GP’s in their management of minor or moderate conditions. Normally referrals are made through the GP or psychiatrist to the mental health teams working in the South Eastern HSC area.

Some of us, though, may suffer longer term mental health problems and difficulties. This can have a major impact on our physical health and our quality of life, so keeping our mind healthy is just as important as keeping our body fit.

Your mental health does not always stay the same. It can change with circumstances and your stage of life. Unfortunately, we often feel uncomfortable talking about our feelings and mental health due to the stigma attached to mental health problems.

These mental difficulties could be brought on by the trauma of a painful event, such as the death of a loved one or the simple build-up of everyday pressures. They can range from mild worries and anxiety associated with everyday life to severe problems affecting mood, communication and the ability to think.

They will allow you to recognise the main mental health issues affecting older people and, most importantly, show you that support and help is out there so you need not suffer alone.
